WMSGA Tournaments and Events
The Women's Maine State Golf Association Tournaments and Events are divided into three categories. For detailed information please click on a category.
Weekly Tournaments
Each Tuesday from May through mid-October -- unless a special tournament is
scheduled -- a weekly tournament is held at two different courses. Entrants
pay a $15 user fee and an $8 entry fee. Both weekly fees are waived for juniors. Fees are outlined in the
handbook.
Applications for weekly tournaments must be sent to the administrative assistant two weeks prior to the tournament. Check your handbook for open/close dates. Send one application and one check per person, per event to the administrative assistant.
Special Tournaments
Metropolitan - A four person best
ball team event, the Metropolitan is held on two consecutive days--
usually a
Monday and Tuesday in June. Winners are posted each day. Members make up their own teams for
this event, and they may or may not be from the same club. The overall winning team,
however, must be made up of members from the same club. This top prize
goes to the team (from the same club) that posts the lowest score of the two days.
Tri-State
- A 3-person match play event, Tri-State pits players from Maine, New
Hampshire, and Vermont in a contest to take home a
traveling trophy and bragging rights. The tournament is played the third
or fourth week in June
on Wednesday and Thursday. Any member with a handicap of 33.9 or
lower may apply for the team, which consists of 30 players in three divisions.
The Tri-State committee selects the Maine team based on
established criteria outlined in the handbook.
New England Championship (NEWGA)
- NEWGA is a 3-day, 54-hole stroke play tournament with a
36-hole cut. Any WMSGA member who is a legal resident of one of the six New England states and
who has a handicap index of 17.4 or lower is eligible.
Seniors Tournament - An 18-hole, stroke play tournament,
seniors 50 and older compete in seven age groups divisions for the
Seniors Tournament. Gross and net
winners are awarded in each age group. Like weekly tournaments, the
number of places paid in each age group is
dependent on the number of entries in those groups.
WMSGA Amateur Championship - Known
within the organization simply as the State Championship, this 54-hole, stroke play
tournament is the premier event of the summer. The state champion, the
junior state champion and the senior state champion are crowned at this
event. Ten gross prizes and ten net prizes are awarded.
Ryder Cup- A two person team event usually played in May, the Ryder Cup calls for three different formats. The first 6 holes are a scramble, the second 6 are alternate shot, and the third 6 are best ball. Members make their own teams. [get application]
